Food additive E 516 is a fine powder with a white or light yellow color, without a specific odor. The substance has a medium solubility in water, does not dissolve in ethanol. Calcium sulphate is found in gypsum, alabaster and selenium (dihydrate). It is obtained from an alloy of potassium sulfate and calcium chloride.

Use

In the food industry E 516 is used in the production of homemade cheese, canned tomatoes. It is used as a substitute for salt, flour and bread improver. It is also a nutrient medium for yeast, and is also used in wine production.

Calcium sulphate is often used in agriculture as a fertilizer. Also in the manufacture of binders, in construction. In medicine, plaster is used to make stable bandages for immobilization in case of fractures, sprains and other injuries of the limbs.
