To adapt your body to the extreme conditions of travel and lifestyle changes, follow a special diet developed by Charles F. Erit from the National Laboratory in Argon, Illinois. It refers to the choice of food when traveling by jet and neutralizing the harmful effects of changing time zones. In any case, if you are on a specific diet, you should consult your doctor before changing it.

Here is what Dr. Erit recommends:

  • Three days before the trip, eat protein-rich foods: turkey, chicken, low-fat cheese. They are a good choice for breakfast and dinner. For lunch, choose foods rich in carbohydrates, such as pasta. The next day, prepare something lighter: fruit, broth soups, salads, toast. On the third day, repeat your choice from the first day.
  • Reduce your intake of liquids containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, some soft drinks and energy drinks between 3pm and 5pm on all three days.
  • If you are traveling west, do not eat anything until noon on the day of departure. You can drink caffeinated beverages that day, but very early in the morning.
  • If you are traveling east, you should not eat anything during the departure hours. It is better not to drink liquids with caffeine, but if you can not refrain, let it be between 18 and 23 o'clock in the evening.
  • When you arrive, have breakfast and lunch rich in protein and dinner high in carbohydrates.
  • Avoid sleeping pills, alcohol and caffeine during the flight. Drink more fluids - water and fruit juices to avoid dehydration. The air in the planes is very dry. 
  • If you arrive at the end of the day during the day, try to spend some time outdoors. Try to stay out in daylight for as many hours as the time zones you have crossed in flight.
  • Do not go to bed until the evening, and for dinner you can eat something from the local cuisine, but only if you find it attractive enough and if it matches your own taste requirements.
