Deaths from cirrhosis of the liver have increased in recent years. One in 15 men in the UK is an alcoholic.
The level of alcohol consumption in the UK is among the 20 highest in the world, according to a study.
The British drink an average of more than 13 liters of pure alcohol per year, equivalent to almost 500 mugs of beer, according to the World Health Organization. The amount is relatively higher than the European average.
Beer accounts for 43% of alcohol consumption in the UK, followed by wine - 30% and spirits - 21%.
The report also shows that deaths from cirrhosis of the liver have increased in recent years, and that one in 15 men in the country is an alcoholic.
Alcohol consumption is the third highest risk factor for disease and disability, and is considered the greatest danger in middle-income countries.
"Alcohol is the cause of about 60 types of diseases and disabilities. Almost 4% of all deaths in the world are due to alcohol, more than deaths caused by HIV / AIDS, violent death and tuberculosis. Alcohol is a common cause of various abuses, as well as absences from work, experts say.
The World Health Organization recommends that all countries implement policies to improve public health and reduce the cost of treating diseases caused by alcoholism.
