Coffee consumption does not increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, according to a new study.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of heart failure, which can lead to an increased risk of stroke , heart failure and even death.
According to previous studies, the consumption of large amounts of coffee may contribute to its production.
According to a new study, the largest of its kind, conducted in Sweden and the United States, involving 250,000 people, no such link has been established.
The first part involves 76,475 men and women, who in 1997 reported the amount of coffee they consumed daily. They are traced for a period of 12 years. The average daily consumption is about 3 glasses a day.
Consumption of the refreshing drink has increased significantly over the last few decades - from about 3.5 million tons in 1970 to 7 million tons today globally. For this reason, research in the field is of great importance.
The second part of the study is a meta-analysis that includes four separate studies.
According to the results, 10,406 cases of atrial fibrillation were diagnosed , and coffee consumption was not associated with them, even at high levels.
The data also show that men may be more sensitive to coffee consumption than women , but this relationship should be the subject of further studies, the researchers explained.
They added that the study data did not provide information on the link between high coffee consumption and other forms of arrhythmia .
The results are published in the journal BMC Medicine .
