Half A Liter Of Soft Drinks A Day - Risk Of Asthma And COPD

Smoking and drinking large amounts of soft drinks every day increases 6.6 times the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Excessive consumption of soft drinks may increase the risk of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to an Australian study.

It involves nearly 17 thousand people aged 16 and over. Scientists are studying the level of use of soft drinks, such as Coca-Cola, flavored mineral water, lemonade, sports drinks and more.

Over 10% of participants say they drink more than half a liter of soft drinks a day.

Consumption of such an amount increases by 1.2 times the risk of developing asthma and 1.7 by COPD, the researchers found.

The study highlights the importance of eating healthy foods and beverages in preventing chronic diseases such as asthma and COPD, says lead researcher Dr. Zumin Shi, of the University of Adelaide.

According to experts, the degree of risk is mainly related to quantity. The more soft drinks consumed, the greater the risk of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Smoking further increases this risk, especially for the development of COPD. People who smoke and consume more than half a liter of soft drinks a day have a 6.6 times higher risk of developing lung disease than those who do not smoke cigarettes and limit their drinks.

The results are published in the journal Respirology .
