A diet rich in meat and dairy products can improve dental health , experts say. They explain that an amino acid that is naturally found in certain foods can break down dental plaque . 
 
Researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Newcastle believe that these data could help many people to prevent the development of caries and gum disease . 
 
L-arginine, which is found in abundance in red and chicken meat, fish and dairy products, has been found to stop the formation of dental plaque . The substance is already added to dental health products and helps treat hypersensitivity of the teeth.
 
Dental plaque is a biofilm that consists of an accumulation of bacteria. It is "responsible" for the development of dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. 
 
 
 
Most types of dental plaque treatment include the use of antimicrobials, including chlorhexidine. They are chemicals that kill the bacteria that make up plaque. The disadvantage is that they can affect the taste and lead to discoloration of the teeth. 
 
The researchers explain that the substance L-arginine has the potential to control dental plaque, and thus can be useful for protection against gum disease.
