Onions are considered to be protective against certain health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Vegetables of the genus Allium , which include about 1250 species of onions, contain compounds that have antioxidant properties. For this reason, they are considered protective against certain conditions, such as  cardiovascular and cancer . 
 
In case of bad breath , garlic and onions can come to the rescue. They contain compounds that are absorbed into the blood and excreted from the lungs hours after consumption. However, people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome should be careful, because garlic and onions are among the foods that can "unlock" the disease. Discomfort may be felt after consumption. 
 
Although Allium vegetables do not contain significant amounts of vitamins and minerals, they are a great source of allyl sulfides - substances that can lower blood pressure and suppress tumor growth. These vegetables contain saponins, which also prevent the development of tumors and lower cholesterol levels. 
 
Extremely important nutrient in vegetables like Allium is quercetin . This anti-inflammatory antioxidant has a beneficial effect on people who suffer from inflammatory diseases such as arthritis . 
 
 
 
In those affected by arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis , there is fluid between the joints, which contains significant amounts of the so-called tumor necrosis factor - a highly inflammatory chemical. Studies show that quartcetin limits these effects of the chemical. For this reason, it is believed that these vegetables prevent and treat arthritis . 
 
Quartcetin also has the ability to reverse the process of memory loss associated with age. However, if we suffer from migraines, we should avoid eating onions, as they contain amino acids that can cause the condition in some.
