Researchers at Marshall University in West Virginia, USA, claim that women who consume walnuts can reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Experimental studies have been performed with genetically modified mice that are prone to cancer and that, in 100% of cases, develop breast cancer by the fifth month. The results of the experiment show that the experimental animals do not get sick or the disease is milder if they have consumed walnuts every day.
The amount of walnuts consumed in human nutrition corresponds to a handful.
Elaine Hardman, the study's lead author, explained the results by the fact that walnuts have more ingredients that have been shown to slow the progression of cancer. The ingredients are Omega3, antioxidants and phytosterols.
The study once again confirms that omega 3 fatty acids have a beneficial effect on health and have a preventive effect against heart disease and reduce the risk of cancer. At this stage, scientists are not sure whether omega 3 fatty acids from walnuts and those from green leaves of vegetables have the same effect on health as omega 3 from fish oil.
