Water - A Necessity On Warm Days

Fluid intake depends on the individual characteristics of the body. People suffering from certain diseases should not overdo it ...

We talk about water and the need for fluids during the hot summer days with Donka Baikova, MD and associate professor of nutrition and dietetics.

We all know that about 72-75% of a person's body weight is water. In the summer, through sweating, we lose significantly more fluid through the skin.

The loss of fluids from the body requires appropriate compensation of the water-salt balance.

A stable and good level of fluid loss and intake must be maintained. This requires a minimum of 1.5 liters of fluid. During the hot summer days, especially if people are exposed to higher temperatures, water intake can increase and reach 2.5 liters.

The more people sweat, the more water their body needs to maintain its homeostasis.

It is important to know that fluid intake depends on the individual characteristics of the body and people suffering from certain diseases should not overdo it. Excessive fluid intake can cause high blood pressure. The volume of blood circulation increases and the heart works under difficult conditions.

When sweating, especially if it is more abundant, in addition to water, sodium is lost. This can lead to a disturbance in the body's water-salt balance . It is good to add a pinch of salt to the kefir on warm days.

Scientific studies over the years have shown that slightly salted tomato juice works very well during the summer months, when you sweat a lot. This is especially recommended for overweight people who also have profuse sweating.

It is recommended to get some of the necessary fluids by drinking tea. The tea should not be too hot, but in no case cold.

On warm days it is good to drink hot drinks with a temperature of about 40 oC . They balance body temperature and the environment and contribute to lower fluid loss from the body.
