Coffee contains antioxidants known for their properties to help prevent the condition.
Women who drink more than one cup of coffee a day are reported to have a reduced risk of stroke, a new study shows.
Scientists emphasize that further research is needed to confirm their theory.
"There is growing scientific evidence that moderate coffee consumption can reduce the risk of certain diseases such as diabetes, liver cancer and stroke," said Dr. Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, who led the study. Her team has been monitoring the nutrition and health of nearly 35,000 women ages 49-83 for more than a decade.
Ladies who drink at least one cup of caffeinated beverage a day have a 22-25% reduced risk of stroke compared to those who do not drink coffee regularly.
It is possible that the reason is due to the properties of the hot drink to reduce inflammatory conditions and improve insulin sensitivity, says Dr. Susanna Larsson.

According to an older study, male smokers who drink coffee are less likely to suffer a stroke. Contradictory results are still being reported in studies looking at the link between caffeinated beverages and their effects on health.
Experts suggest that high doses of caffeine raise blood pressure. Others report that coffee reduces the risk of cancer of the pancreas, colon, brain, mouth and throat.
