An Ingredient In Beer Helps Us Lose Weight

The flavonoid xanthohumol, which is contained in hops, can affect cholesterol levels, blood sugar and reduce weight.

A compound found in one of the main ingredients in beer can lower cholesterol , blood sugar and reduce excess weight , according to a new study.

It is from researchers at Oregon State University, USA, and found that taking specific levels of xanthohumol, a flavonoid found in hops, significantly improves some of the major markers of metabolic syndrome and also reduces weight gain .

The data from the laboratory study, which focuses on polyphenols and health, suggest a new approach to the problems associated with obesity, high cholesterol levels and elevated blood glucose levels.

The researchers explained that in the presence of the highest doses of xanthohumol, the levels of "bad" LDL chole with terol decreased by as much as 80%, insulin levels - by 42%, and those of a specific biomarker for inflammatory processes - by 78%.

The results of the study also show that weight gain also decreases in the presence of the flavonoid xanthohumol . It turns out that its intake increases oxygen consumption, as well as metabolic levels. So it ultimately helps to control weight .

According to lead author Cristobal Miranda, it is the first time a substance has been identified that has the potential to affect so many health problems. He added that further studies are needed to prove the efficacy and safety of this flavonoid in humans.

It is naturally found in beer, but the highest dose used in the study was 60 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. This corresponds to a dose of 350 mg for a person who weighs 70 kilograms. The amount far exceeds what can be taken through food intake .

The data are published in the Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics .
