Berries Slow Down Memory Impairment

The most significant benefits for brain health are observed in women who eat at least 1/2 cup of blueberries or a cup of strawberries a week.

Consumption of berries helps slow the aging of the brain and the development of Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study among more than 16,000 women over the age of 70.

 
Researchers have found that those who regularly eat delicious fruit retain their memory for an average of 2.5 years longer than women who do not eat it as often. 
 
There is no reason why the results should not be the same for males, said lead author Elizabeth Devore.
 
Participants were surveyed about their eating habits over a four-year period. The researchers also tested the memory of the volunteers every two years for 6 years.

According to the study, flavonoids in berries fight free radicals that damage brain cells. Antioxidants interact with harmful molecules before they cause damage, scientists say. 
 
Against the aging of the brain, a healthy and balanced diet is important, and exercises such as puzzles and other mind-stimulating activities also help, previous research shows.
 
The results are published in the Annals of Neurology.
