We all know that a healthier diet reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart problems, and even cancer. But can limiting calorie intake reduce the aging process ? According to a study published in the journal Mollecular & Cellular Proteomics, this is entirely possible.
Researchers at Brigham Youth University have found that ribosomes , which generate proteins in cells, slow aging. They used mice to prove their point. One group of rodents had unlimited access to high-calorie food, and the other only 35% of the total amount of food for the first. Both received the necessary nutrients to survive for several days.
"When calorie consumption is limited, life expectancy increases linearly," said John Price, a professor of biochemistry at the University of Brigham. According to him, the restriction really leads to biochemical changes in the body, which slow down aging.
"Food is not just a material that our body burns, it coordinates the cells in the body ," Price explains. He and his colleagues will devote their time to experiments to determine how different foods affect the mechanisms of aging. Humans are expected to be involved in their experiments, which have so far been applied to mice.
Use alcohol in moderation or abstain from it altogether, no smoking, seven hours or more of sleep a day , and maintaining a normal body mass index. These are the basic principles that we must follow in order to have a longer life, experts advise.
