Consumption of three cups of coffee a day in middle age can increase life expectancy.
A study involving more than 5,000,000 people between the ages of 50 and 70 found that the risk of premature death was significantly reduced due to caffeinated beverage consumption . The health of the volunteers was monitored for 12 years.
Although excessive consumption of caffeine is harmful to health, researchers have found that after middle age it can reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, stroke, trauma, diabetes, infections .
Consumption of two to three cups of coffee a day reduces the risk by about 15%, according to the study.
However, drinking more than three cups of coffee does not have this positive effect, experts explain.
Further research is needed to determine the exact mechanism by which coffee affects life expectancy and whether regular coffee is more beneficial than decaffeinated coffee and vice versa, the research team explains.
The results of the study are published in the Journal of Caffeine Research .
