Moderate coffee consumption reduces the risk of mild cognitive impairment, which is an intermediate condition that distinguishes between normal aging and the development of dementia. The conclusion is a team from the University of Bari Aldo Moro in Italy, which conducted a large-scale study of aging, involving nearly 6,000 people aged between 65 and 84 years.
Dr. Vincenzo Solfrizi's team found that consuming one or two cups of coffee a day among adults reduced the likelihood of developing cognitive decline, compared to people who rarely or did not drink the black beverage.
However, those who drink more coffee and overdo it, also have a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment, the researchers added.
Coffee consumption is likely to have a long-term neuroprotective effect, and higher plasma caffeine levels play a positive role against cognitive decline and dementia. This action of coffee is explained by its ability to activate adenosine A2A receptors, which help to recover the brain from damage in Alzheimer's disease, according to the research team.
Another interesting piece of information about coffee consumption is that two or three cups of the drink a day limit the risk of erectile dysfunction in men.
