Decaffeinated Coffee Is Useful Against Diabetes

Three ingredients of coffee help block the toxic accumulation of proteins associated with the development of the condition.

Consumption of coffee is useful in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, scientists say.

 
According to a study, three components of the drink - caffeine, caffeic and chlorogenic acid - help block the toxic accumulation of proteins that are associated with the development of the condition.
 
The extracts show benefits in preventing the loss of insulin-producing cells, explains lead researcher Kun Huang of the Chinese University of Science and Technology.
 
The discovery could help create a more effective treatment for the disease, scientists say.
 
Laboratory tests show that all three ingredients have a positive effect on limiting the toxic process, but caffeine is the least effective.
 
Given the results, decaffeinated coffee has been shown to be more beneficial in reducing the risk of diabetes than caffeinated coffee, Kun Huang added. In addition, the percentage of caffeic and chlorogenic acid in the decaffeinated beverage is higher than in the caffeinated beverage.
 
The results are published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry .
