There is a theory that the body uses taste to regulate hunger, and artificial sweeteners disrupt this mechanism.

When following a diet, for example, the consumption of diet cola is not recommended, as the intake of such drinks increases appetite , experts say.

According to studies, artificial sweeteners in low-calorie liquid products cause blood sugar levels to increase over time.

A study of nearly 500 people found that those who drank soft drinks daily increased their waistline by 70% over a 10-year period than those who did not drink low-calorie fluids. And people who drink 2 or more low-calorie drinks a day have about a 5-fold increase in waistline, the results show.

Differences are observed even after taking into account other factors such as age, education, smoking, levels of physical activity and the presence of diseases such as diabetes.

Abdominal obesity is considered particularly dangerous and is linked to many health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, gallbladder disease and breast cancer, says epidemiologist Prof. Elena Hazuda.

Other scientists are experimenting with people predisposed to diabetes whose diets include artificial sweeteners .

After three months of follow-up, participants who took artificial sweeteners through food and fluids had significantly higher blood sugar levels than those who did not consume such products.

A study of 3,700 people, conducted over an 8-year period, found that regular consumers of low-calorie carbonated beverages were overweight compared to people who did not drink this type of liquid.

"Drinking so-called diet drinks should not be encouraged, because they can have fewer calories but no less health effects than drinks containing more sugar. ", Clarifies Prof. Elena Hazuda.

There is also evidence that aspartame , a widely used sweetener in soft drinks and other products, also contributes to higher blood sugar levels.

"Aspartame intake has a direct effect on elevated blood glucose levels, which further confirms the theory of many scientists that there is a link between regular intake of low-calorie carbonated beverages and the risk of diabetes in children ," said the expert. Prof. Gabriel Fernandez.

A 2007 study found that feeding children low-calorie foods and beverages could increase the risk of obesity.

Children need to have a good healthy and balanced diet with enough calories to give them energy to perform daily activities, experts in nutrition and nutrition emphasize.
