Glomerulonephritis is a kidney inflammation that can affect anyone. It often occurs in children and adolescents, about one to two weeks after a respiratory infection. This is because antigen-antibody complexes formed during infection are deposited on the fine capillary networks of the glomeruli in the kidney. In many cases, the origin of the disease remains unclear.
 
The kidneys have a cleansing role in the body and when their structures are affected, the whole body is affected. On the one hand, the purification of the blood from nitrogen products is disturbed. At the same time, the kidneys become disease-permeable to plasma proteins and the patient loses much of them in the urine (proteinuria). Another phenomenon is the presence of blood in the urine - hematuria .
 
The reduction of proteins in the blood leads to changes in oncotic pressure and the fluid from the vessels passes into the intercellular space - edema is formed .
 
In general, the reduced blood flow through the glomeruli signals to the body that the blood pressure is low and a mechanism is set to increase it. This mechanism is also activated in glomerulonephritis, although there is no low blood pressure, resulting in arterial hypertension .

In acute glomerulonephritis

The diet aims to facilitate the excretion of metabolic products and relieve hypertension and edema. Feeding should be 5-6 times a day . The emphasis is on plant foods with a strong restriction of protein and complete exclusion of salt .
 
The amount of fluid should be equal to the amount of urine excreted in the previous day. The preparation of the food should consist of cooking and baking, it is also allowed to lightly fry in a small amount of vegetable fat - oil.
  • Bread and pasta - 100 g of cornstarch bread without salt and protein or 50 g of wheat bread. Ordinary bread made with salt is forbidden.
  • Cereals - rice and legumes are not allowed. Pasta without protein and pilaf is possible.
  • Dairy products - cheeses are prohibited. Up to 60 g of milk, cream and cottage cheese are allowed. When increasing the amount, this should be done at the expense of a reduced amount of meat.
  • Eggs - up to 2-3 pieces per week loosely boiled or scrambled; on the dish - to the egg.
  • Soups and appetizers - the amount of soups is important to comply with the permitted liquid. Cereals and legumes are prohibited in soups, as well as meat, fish and mushroom broths. Soups should be vegetable, can be seasoned with cream. Appetizers are vegetable salads seasoned with sunflower oil.
  • Meat, poultry and fish - up to 60 g. per day lean. Excludes seafood, marinated fish, dried and smoked salted meat.
  • Vegetables - inadmissible are: pickled and salted vegetables (pickles, pickles ...), spinach, sorrel, cauliflower, mushrooms, radishes, garlic and legumes. Potatoes (200-250 g) and fresh vegetables (400-450 g), onions - roasted or boiled, dill and parsley are accepted.
  • Fruits - are allowed in any form - fresh, dried, baked, compotes, jellies.
 
  • Confectionery - chocolate, cocoa, ice cream are prohibited. Honey and jam can be taken.
  • Spices - meat, fish and mushroom sauces, as well as black pepper, mustard and horseradish are prohibited.
  • Drinks - Coffee, cocoa and sodium-rich mineral waters are prohibited. You can drink weak teas with lemon, as well as fruit and vegetable juices. Monitor the amount of fluids ingested!

How long is the regime?

The described regime lasts about 20 days, after which it can be relieved. In case of persistent swelling and increased blood pressure, but preserved renal function, the diet is enriched with another portion of boiled meat per day or 200 ml of milk. Allowed eggs can be up to 1 pc. per day.
