Middle-aged women, who drink 15-30 g of alcohol in the evening, ensure good health in old age.
Middle-aged women, who drink only one small drink a night, ensure good health in old age, a study shows.
The drink can be a small mug of beer , a glass of wine or up to 30 ml of hard alcohol.
Researchers observed 14,000 women and concluded that those who drank less alcohol were much more likely to reach 70 years of age in excellent health than obese women or women who drank too much alcohol.
Women aged 50-60, who can afford 15-30 ml of alcohol a day, are 28% more likely to maintain their overall health in old age.
Other studies also show that minimal alcohol consumption reduces the risk of heart disease.
According to experts, alcohol can have a positive effect on reducing insulin resistance, inflammation, high cholesterol and other harmful processes in the body.
The judicious use of alcoholic beverages is useful against cardiovascular disease, especially for women who have gone through menopause, but it is still important not to overdo it, says Natasha Stewart of the British Heart Foundation.
Overconsumption does not offer any protection for heart health. On the contrary, it can lead to heart muscle damage, stroke and high blood pressure .
Let's remember the useful ways to maintain health - a healthy and complete diet, physical activity, avoidance of smoking and enough sleep .
The study was published in PLoS Medicine .
