Daily consumption of carbonated soft drinks increases the risk of diabetes by 22%, a new study shows. 500 ml of sugary drinks a day increases the risk of type II diabetes , according to a study published in Diabetologia .

The researchers collected data on the consumption of fruit juices, carbonated sweetened beverages and energy drinks in eight European countries. The study was conducted with 12,403 diabetics and a control group of 16,154 healthy individuals.
The authors of the study point out that the effect of sweetened beverages on the risk of diabetes is not limited to body weight. A person can have a healthy body weight, but continues to be at increased risk if he regularly consumes carbonated beverages.
Consumption of fruit juices without added sugar is not associated with a significant increase in risk.
