Does Drinking Coffee Increase The Risk Of Cerebral Hemorrhage?

All activities that lead to a sudden rise in blood pressure can cause aneurysm to rupture ...

Drinking coffee, having sex, stress, increase the risk of stroke, say Dutch scientists.

A 3-year study of 250 patients identified several risk factors associated with cerebral hemorrhage. All of them raise blood pressure, which can lead to rupture of blood vessels, say experts from the University Medical Center in Utrecht.

Coffee drinking has been found to be responsible for more than 1 in 10 cases of cerebral aneurysms. Stress increases the risk more than 23 times, but is responsible for only 2.7% of cases, the results show.

According to the study, intense physical activity increased the risk of rupturing an aneurysm by 7.9%, blowing your nose by 5.4%, having sex by 4.3%, drinking a car by 3.5%, and experiencing anxiety and anger by 1.3%.

"Anything that causes a sudden and brief rise in blood pressure is considered a risk of rupturing the aneurysm," explains Dr. Monique Vlack, a neurologist and lead author of the study.

Reducing caffeine consumption may reduce the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage, scientists say.

High blood pressure weakens blood vessels, which can be caused by being overweight, smoking and immobilizing.

More research is needed to confirm the results, experts say.

The study was published in the journal Stroke .
