E102 Means The Dye Tartrazine

E102 is a colorant that is used as an additive in the food industry to acquire a yellow or green color of the product.

Tartrazine is the chemical name of the food supplement E102. Used for coloring various drinks, pastries, jams and marmalades, cornflakes, snacks, canned fish, dry soups and more.


Tartrazine is a synthetic lemon-yellow azo crystal , well soluble in water. It can give both yellow and brilliant blue color to food. In combination with E142 a green tint is achieved.


The chemical can cause various allergic reactions, especially in people suffering from asthma or aspirin intolerance. Provokes asthma attacks in children.


Consumption of tartrazine can cause anxiety, migraine, clinical depression, blurred vision, itchy skin, general fatigue, hot flashes, suffocation, purple patches on the skin and sleep disturbances.


Tartrazine increases the risk of developing thyroid tumors, damage to the structure or number of chromosomes. Leads to hyperactivity.


The use of tartrazine in any form is banned in Norway and Austria. In Bulgaria it is allowed in the specified foods, according to Ordinance 8 on the requirements for the use of food additives.
