E 131 or blue patented V is a chemical that is a synthetic dye. Soluble in water, in the form of powder or granules, has a blue or blue-violet color. In combination with other colorants it can form a green tint, brown or black. The additive is known as coal tar, formed from coal tar.
This substance is not often used in the food industry, but can be found in raw minced meat, in some sausages and meat products. It is also used in the making of some beverages. No acceptable daily dose has been established. In some EU countries, the additive is allowed in the production of certain foods, but the exact amount must not be exceeded.
Other areas of application of Patent Blue V : in cosmetics, medicine, textile industry, allowed for coloring of medical and cosmetic products (pharmaceuticals, shampoos, gels, foams, liquid soaps, toothpastes, in alcohol-based perfumes). It is also used for dyeing woolen fabrics.
The additive E 131 is prohibited for use in the food industry as a coloring agent, including in the EU member states, USA, Australia. In Russia and Ukraine it is allowed.
The use of the substance may impair the functioning of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, cause allergies (urticaria, eczema), shortness of breath. In addition, products containing E 131 should not be taken by people who are sensitive to aspirin. Influence on children: excitement, extremely active behavior.
