The additive E 153 (charcoal) has a natural origin and has a very low level of danger.
Charcoal is a fossil organic substance that is formed under the soil by ancient plants. Sometimes, in the food industry it is used as a colorant additive E 153, mainly for coloring confectionery and beverages.
The substance is extracted in different ways, depending on the depth of the deposits.
The additive E 153 (vegetable charcoal) should not be confused with the additive with a similar name charcoal (E 152). The latter, unlike the natural product, is obtained only in a synthetic way.
E 153 is safe , although it is not inherent in the human body. Much of the dye is not absorbed in the intestines and is excreted with food debris.
Vegetable charcoal is used as a fossil fuel, in medicine (it is part of activated carbon), in the production of paints.
Permitted for use in the food industry in many countries.
