Regular consumption of apples reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 13-22%.
Thanks to their antioxidant properties, apples increase life expectancy by 10%, scientists report.
It is believed that harmful substances generated in the body, called free radicals, which cause unwanted changes in it, are involved in the aging process and some diseases, and antioxidants counteract these processes.
An excellent source of antioxidants, for example, are brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, broccoli, blueberries, apples and others.
The team of scientist Zhen Yu Chen found that apple polyphenols not only prolong life expectancy but also help maintain the ability to move. In addition, apple polyphenols affect the levels of various biochemical substances - markers of aging.
The results of the current study support the findings of other studies, including those that show that if women consume apples frequently, they reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 13-22%.
The study is published in ACS's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry .
