Family Scandals Increase The Risk Of Metabolic Syndrome

People with metabolic syndrome are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

U.S. researchers have conducted a study on the link between failed marriage and the onset of metabolic syndrome.

They suggested that constant conflicts in the family could cause stress and depression in the spouses, which in turn could cause endocrine disorders and metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a disease condition in which a person has simultaneous abdominal obesity, high levels of triglycerides and / or low levels of so-called. "Good cholesterol", high blood pressure and high blood sugar or diabetes.

People with metabolic syndrome are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

It is estimated that 25% of the world's adult population has a metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed by the following components:

  • Overweight - waist circumference in women over 88, in men - 94 cm.
  • Dyslipidemias - increased triglycerides above 1.7 mmol / l, reduced HDL cholesterol
  • High blood pressure - over 130/85 mm Hg
  • Elevated blood sugar - 6.1-6.9 mmol / l

The most common causes of metabolic syndrome are:

  • High-calorie food
  • Excessive nutrition
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Genetic burden
  • Stress

The study involved 276 married couples who had at least 20 years of married life. The volunteers were between 45 and 70 years old.

The questions asked to the participants in the study provided the experts with detailed information about the relationships of married couples, the positive and negative aspects of their marriages and even the degree of stress and depression in individual volunteers.

A number of physiological parameters were also measured, such as waist width, subcutaneous fat, cholesterol level, glucose and blood lipid composition. All the signs by which the metabolic syndrome can be diagnosed were taken into account.

Researchers found that women who reported misunderstandings and problems with their partner were more likely to show signs of depression. In addition, metabolic syndrome was more commonly diagnosed in this group.

Interestingly, in men who also reported problems in the family, depression was rarely reported and no metabolic syndrome was observed.

According to a study published in the journal Psychological Science, this is due to the fact that women are more emotional and more sensitive to relationships with others and especially in the family.
