Foods Rich In Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Reduce The Risk Of Prostate Cancer

A diet that includes omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish and fish oil, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils reduces the risk of prostate cancer in people at genetic risk.

A diet that includes omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish and fish oil, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils reduces the risk of prostate cancer in people at genetic risk. This was published by researchers from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Many genetic mutations are associated with a predisposition to prostate cancer. It has not been clear until now whether the type of fat included in the diet can modulate the risk of developing cancer.
To track the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on the prostate, Yang Chen studied mice that have a pronounced predisposition to organ cancer - Pten-knockout mice. The results were encouraging, in contrast to the effect of omega-6 fatty acids. The latter had the opposite effect. The administration of the omega-3 desaturase enzyme to mice, which converts omega-6 to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, also had a beneficial effect.
The researchers found that the mechanism of action of these substances is based in part on cell death dependent on the Bad protein.
A study on the effect of omega-3-unsaturated acids on already developed cancer is forthcoming.
