How To Cook Traditional Irish Shepherd's Pie - Recipe

Required products :

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 500 grams of ground beef or lamb
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3-4 large carrots, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon frozen peas
  • 3-4 stalks of fresh thyme, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 glass of red wine
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcester sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chicken broth
  • about 1 kg of mashed boiled potatoes
  • 1 broken egg
  • grated parmesan if desired

Method of preparation :

Stew the carrots in olive oil until soft. Add the onion and fry for 2-3 minutes, then add the meat.

Season with black pepper and thyme.

Fry the minced meat, crushing it with a spatula during cooking. Drain the excess fat from the pan and add the butter and peas.

Sprinkle with flour and stir.

Add the tomato paste, wine and Worcestershire sauce.

Wait for the liquid to evaporate and pour the broth. Reduce heat and cook until you get a thick sauce. Season to taste.

Grease a suitable pan and pour the products from the pan. Cover the minced meat with the mashed potatoes, spread with egg and sprinkle with Parmesan, if using.

Bake for 20 minutes at 200 degrees until the shepherd's pie acquires a golden and crispy crust.

Slice and serve.
