For A Healthy Heart - 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil A Day

Regular consumption of olive oil reduces by almost half the risk of death from heart disease.

Two tablespoons of olive oil a day almost halves the risk of death from heart disease, a new study shows. The equivalent of one spoon reduces the danger by about 28%.

Olive oil does not have the same effect on reducing fatal cancer, scientists have found.

The results are based on a more than 13-year analysis of the diets of nearly 41,000 people between the ages of 26 and 69.

During the study, about 2,000 participants died, 956 from cancer and 416 from cardiovascular disease.

The data show that the victims of heart disease are among the lowest consumers of olive oil. Those who consume 29 grams or more a day - a little more than two tablespoons, are 44% lower risk of death from heart disease .

Olive oil is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats and polyphenols , which are useful in preventing inflammation in the body, as well as the risk of blood clots.

Olive oil varies according to the degree of processing. The more crude it is, the higher the polyphenol content.

According to experts, the Mediterranean diet , which is rich in olive oil, fish, fruits and vegetables , plays an even greater role in preventing cardiovascular disease than previously thought.

The results are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition .

Regular consumption of olive oil also protects against stroke , according to another study.

The researchers tracked the eating habits of 7,625 participants. Regular olive oil users have a 41% lower risk of stroke than those who do not include vegetable fat in their diet.
