Excess fructose in our daily ration can lead to leptin resistance and as a result - obesity, when the diet includes a lot of calories, especially fat.
Leptin is a hormone that maintains a balance between nutritional needs and energy expenditure. There are studies showing that the loss of its function can lead to the accumulation of extra pounds with excessive intake of fats and carbohydrates. The role of fructose is now emphasized.
Fructose is normally found in fruits, but they are not the problem. Many of the products on the market today are high in fructose. The current study was conducted by experts from Florida. For it, they used laboratory rodents, divided into two groups and fed with two types of food - with and without fructose. After six months of follow-up, the team did not detect any differences in body weight or fat levels, nor in leptin, blood sugar or cholesterol levels. There was only one difference - the high content of fructose increases the level of triglycerides. This leads doctors to believe that leptin resistance develops slowly, unnoticed. It is usually associated with obesity and the lack of it is more than surprising.
After the development of resistance already, the respective group of animals ate much more with correlated weight gain and body fat than rodents subjected to a normal carbohydrate regime from the beginning.
