Fruit juices increase the risk of colon cancer, according to scientists. During the processing of the drink, a significant part of the antioxidants in the fruit is lost.
Fruit juices contain high amounts of sugar and increase the risk of some cancers, scientists say.
According to an Australian study, much of the fruit's ingredients, which generally protect against tumors, are lost in the preparation of the drink.
Experts analyze the eating habits of 2,200 adults. The team followed the participants for two years in order to determine how many of them developed colon cancer.
Daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, such as apples, cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli, reduces the risk of developing the disease, the researchers found.
However, it turns out that people who drink 3 glasses of juice every day are more at risk for rectal cancer , a form of colon cancer.
According to scientists, the high sugar content in the drink can lead to the development of tumors. In addition, a significant portion of the antioxidants in fruits that help protect against bowel cancer, including fiber and vitamin C, are lost during juice processing.
Even freshly squeezed fruit juice can contain an amount of sugar equal to 5 teaspoons , as the squeezing process itself concentrates the sweetness of the fruit. The amount is equal to 2/3 of the sugar content in 300 ml of carbonated drink, which raises blood sugar levels, disrupts metabolism and contributes to the accumulation of excess weight.
In order to get the maximum benefit from the ingredients of fruits and vegetables, they should be consumed mostly fresh , experts recommend.
