Good Relationships At Home Reduce Stress

The pleasant atmosphere at home and emotional support from loved ones helps to normalize blood pressure, scientists have proven in research.

A loved one's hug at home lowers blood pressure after a busy day, a study found. Specialists from the University of Toronto, Canada studied 216 couples for a year. The results of the study were presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association.

Experts have found that high blood pressure is lowered in people whose work is stressful, but enjoy a good marital relationship.

Canadian researchers studied doctors, nurses, administrators, staff and visitors at the University of Toronto's research center between the ages of 40 and 65 who have been working and living with a partner for at least half a year.
Blood pressure was measured in the morning. None of the participants suffered from cardiovascular disease and, accordingly, was not treated for such. An assessment was made of how tense the working conditions of the participants were. The main factor for stress , as it turned out, was the working conditions, the change of which did not depend on the participants. Marital relationships were also tested.

In participants who had stressful events during the day but enjoyed a good relationship at home, normalization of blood pressure in the evening was registered. The results are important because with age there is a tendency to a permanent increase in blood pressure.

In those who had, in addition to stressful work and family conflicts, high blood pressure was registered.

The study's lead author, Professor Sheldon Tobe, noted that workplace stress had a serious impact on blood pressure, both clinically and statistically. In health care, stress is not taken into account, but it affects both the family and our health in general. The emotional support of the partner is essential for a harmonious marital relationship, says Prof. Toub. According to him, people who are stressed at work and have problems in the family should consult their doctor because of high blood pressure and their health.

According to Sherman Griffiths, a member of the British Heart Association, when stress is low, it has the positive effect of maintaining motivation and enthusiasm, but when it is excessive it is detrimental to health. With a balance between the bad sides of the workday and the emotional support from loved ones, family and friends, dealing with stress is easy.

The British Heart Association has published the results of another study related to heart problems, which aimed to clarify the link between stress enzymes and cardiovascular disease. The effect of the enzyme 11HSD1, which is secreted by fat cells, was studied. This enzyme is responsible for the level of cortisol - the stress hormone. Experiments have shown that elevated levels of this enzyme increase the risk of obesity. Good family relationships are becoming a prophylactic method to prevent high blood pressure and obesity.
