Required products :

  • peel of 5 oranges
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • water
  • a little powdered sugar

Method of preparation :

Cut the orange peels into large pieces, put them in a saucepan and pour 2.5 liters of cold water. Put on the stove and let it boil for 10 minutes, then drain the liquid with a colander and pour again with 2.5 liters of cold water. This time add a teaspoon of salt, let the water boil, drain it and pour cold again.

Third time do the procedure: boil the crusts in water with a teaspoon of salt for 10 minutes and wash with cold water.

When the crusts are drained, cut them into strips 0.5 cm wide.

Pour 1-2 tea cups of hot water into a bowl and dissolve the sugar in it. Put on the stove and when it boils, add the orange peels. Leave to cook for about 40 - 60 minutes. Towards the end of cooking, pour the lemon juice.

When the crusts become almost transparent and very little of the syrup remains, pour into a colander to drain the liquid. The latter resembles honey and can be used as a substitute.

Arrange the drained crusts on baking paper and wait for them to dry. You can speed up the process by placing them next to a stove or other heater, but even without this moment, they will dry well.

Two hours later, roll the crusts in powdered sugar (or crystal) and use to decorate cakes and desserts, add to oatmeal or muesli for breakfast, to cake batter or simply serve with tea.

Enjoy your meal!
