In a thick-bottomed saucepan, mix the sugar with the milk and cream. Add the vanilla and a pinch of salt. Place the pan on the stove and bring the mixture to the boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Once the milk boils, reduce the heat and add a pinch of baking soda. Let the combination cook on low heat for 40-50 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Towards the end of the process, the sauce will be thick with a caramel tinge and may start to burn, so you will need to stir vigorously and constantly.
About 230 milliliters of the finished product are obtained. When cool a bit, put in a jar, close with a lid and store in the refrigerator if you will not use immediately.
Dulce de leche is a suitable addition to desserts, coffee, pastries and more.
