All citrus trees have a common ancestor 15 million years ago. Their evolution is divided into three stages. The result of which are the appearance and cultivation of limes, fresh lemons, kumquats, fresh oranges, pomelo and others.
Researchers in Spain have compared the chloroplasts and genomes of more than 30 species of new citrus plants with those of the already known mandarins and pomelo. They found that the citrus family is divided into three groups, whose first appearance was 6.3 - 7.5 million years ago. They are: Australian varieties and those including papeda, pomelo, tangerines and Japanese yazu.
Their combination leads to the emergence of a third, combining sweet and sour notes of the fruit - such as kumquat, bitter or sweet oranges, as well as thick or thin bark, tangerines, calamanders, tangels and others.
Chloroplasts, just like mitochondria, are inherited only from the mother, but scientists have found a surprisingly high degree of hybridization in chloroplast DNA. Accordingly, both male and female plants have played a role in contributing to the development of citrus chloroplast diversity.
Genes change, which in turn leads to the possibility of growing plants in less favorable conditions. This new phylogeny, based on chloroplast genomes, clarifies the evolution of citrus, rejecting previous ones and ambiguities.
