Required products :

  • 120 grams of long grain rice, cooked
  • 250 grams of minced beef
  • 250 grams of canned vine leaves, drained
  • 2 tomatoes, cut into slices
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons parsley, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons celery, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon oregano, dried
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 freshly squeezed lemon
  • 150 milliliters of cold water

Method of preparation :

  • In a deep bowl, combine the rice, meat, onion, herbs, celery, salt and pepper. Mix well and add the tomato puree.
  • Unroll a vine leaf and place 1 overflowing teaspoon of the filling in the center.
  • Gather both ends of the vine leaf over the stuffing, then roll it up. Do not roll too tightly as the rice will swell. Repeat with the remaining leaves.
  • Arrange the tomato slices on the bottom of the pan, spread the sarma on top and the chopped garlic cloves between them.
  • Sprinkle with freshly squeezed lemon juice, add water and cover the pan with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in a preheated 180 degree oven for about 45 minutes. If necessary, add more water.
  • Serve the sarma with yogurt or bechamel sauce.
