Heat a dry pan and toast the bacon. Crush it and set it aside. Heat olive oil in a pan, fry onions, garlic, tomatoes and season with salt and pepper.
Pour the tomato juice, add the basil, sugar, tomato paste and cheddar. Stir and reduce the heat. Cook over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cool the soup, garnish with sour cream and sprinkle with bacon. Pour into bowls and serve.
