10 years ago, hummus in Ukraine could only be found in specialized stores or restaurants of Jewish cuisine. And now it is available in literally every supermarket. We tell you what kind of product it is and why it has become so popular.
What it is?A snack based on chickpeas - Turkish peas. Hummus has long been known in the Middle East: in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey. It came to the West in the 90s and quickly won the love of Americans: according to recent surveys, more than 15 million US citizens regularly eat hummus.
Is it useful or harmful? In addition to chickpeas, traditional hummus includes olive oil, sesame paste (tahini), lemon juice, and spices. Dietitian Elizabeth G. Matteo of Boston University finds this kit quite useful. "Hummus has more vitamins and minerals than many other sauces and pastes. It is rich in calcium, folic acid and magnesium," she says.
Chickpea paste helps stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent heart disease. And also - to maintain a normal weight, because it contains healthy fats, proteins and fiber. This combination leaves a feeling of satiety for a long time.
Although hummus is good for health, it should not be consumed in packages. It has a lot of sesame and butter, which means calories. Purchased pasta usually contains about 70 kcal per two tablespoons.
And nutritionists advise to pay attention to the products with which you eat it. If you dip bread, chips or crackers into hummus, you get a high-calorie and high-carbohydrate dish. Instead, you can cut raw, crunchy vegetables: bell peppers, broccoli, celery, and carrots. Well, or smear them with protein food prepared in the Mediterranean style (falafel, fish or chicken).
Choose a product with a lower salt content than others: many brands overdo it. And it is even better to take a company that prepares as close as possible to the traditional recipe: chickpeas, sesame paste, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt and spices. Avoid hummus that contains sugar or other oils - it will no longer be as tasty and healthy.
