If we want to consume smaller portions, we must think about this when preparing food
Researchers at Germany's University of Tübingen have found that people who only think they are eating healthily while cooking are more likely to serve smaller portions, which is crucial for weight maintenance and weight loss.
In the study, participants were divided into three groups: one that focused on the health benefits of food, another on food enjoyment, and a third that needed to feel full.
Those considering the health benefits of food chose smaller portions than the other groups. In other words, if we are trying to eat healthier, we can think about it while cooking. This will probably make us serve smaller portions and save unnecessary calories.
For the study, brain scanners showed how this approach can activate activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is related to self-control and future nutrition planning.
"The increase in obesity since the 1950s has been accompanied by an increase in portion sizes. We find that changing individuals' thinking during pre-meal planning has the potential to improve portion control," said Stephanie Culman, a presenter. researcher in the study.
Portion control is not easy to achieve. Even the healthiest diet requires moderation in portions. This is because the standard serving sizes defined years ago do not match those that we would like to follow now.
For starters, "what's on our plate" doesn't count as a normal serving, as it's relative.
Studies show that both non-dieters and healthcare professionals do not accurately estimate portion sizes. There are simple and practical ways to determine a healthy amount of food, whether it is a main course, a snack or a treat. And the above trick is one of them.
