- to what extent does nutrition determine our health and how much truth is contained in the sentence "You are what you eat."?
That's right, "Man is what he eats." Hippocrates - the greatest physician of antiquity, the reformer of medicine, the father of modern medicine, said: "Your food can be poison, but also medicine." Every modern person knows that he must choose his food carefully. Well, nutrition is the leading contact of the human body with the environment. Animals are endowed with an instinct for self-preservation in this direction. However, we humans are endowed only with reason. Which we need not only for what we eat, but also for so many things in the field of nutrition. 80% of all diseases are due to impaired function of the gastrointestinal tract, respectively nutrition.
- In caring for the child in terms of nutrition, parents seem to be at both extremes: we strive to protect the child from everything packaged and look for the most natural products, home-cooked food and vice versa, we believe that after eating so many products in our childhood we are healthy and the child will be like that? Are they both right, and where exactly is the "golden mean"?
It is very important to understand that healthy eating habits are cultivated mostly in a family environment. If a young child does not know the taste of chocolate, for example, he will not be interested in it. Improper nutrition, lack of vitamins from fruits and vegetables deplete the immune system and children get sick. All delicacies are substances unknown in nature - refined starch, colorants, preservatives, flavor enhancers, emulsifiers and a hundred more E's with a number after them, of which we have no idea. Avoid these foods, they are harmful to the body. The "golden mean" of time has been to adhere to a naturally balanced diet to move enough, to live actively.
- There are rules regarding nutrition that never get old, on the contrary, the latest scientific research only proves the wisdom of generations before us. What are these rules? Conversely, which recommendations from the past turn out to be completely wrong and should we avoid them?
The rules of nutrition do not change much, they are the same, but unfortunately the food and lifestyle of modern society, compared to our ancestors, are changing. What I think is that children and adults need to be encouraged to move more. There is one basic rule and it is very simple - eating should be pleasant to be complete. It has been found that nutrients are absorbed by the body only when the child eats with appetite and in a pleasant environment. Although small, children have a developed sense of aesthetics.
- What problems does the modern child most often suffer from, related to nutrition? Why? What do you think is the reason for this? And how can we prevent such a risk in our child?
30% of 7-year-olds are obese and 13% have metabolic syndrome. Statistics show that Bulgarian children and adults are the biggest fans of fast food. Skipping breakfast ranks us among the nations with poor eating habits. Our country ranks 6th in Europe in the number of obese children. Only Bulgarians when buying drugs do not ask about side effects, but ask if they can be taken with alcohol. So, I dare say that our diet is really wrong on a cultural level - the unhealthy eating pattern of the family environment, the extremely high intake of high-energy foods and beverages, but also low physical activity. And it is not good to justify the socio-economic status of society. Rather, the problems in the culture of nutrition on the part of the parents are at the root of this problem. The mass and indiscriminate supply of unhealthy foods means that we cannot create the habit of avoiding health-threatening foods on our own. On the other side of the barricade are eating disorders in adolescents and adults. People with anorexia and bulimia are becoming more common.
