Consumption of fish can reduce the risk of hearing loss, according to a large study.
Researchers in Boston, USA, have found that women who eat at least two servings of fish and omega-3 fatty acids each week can slow their hearing loss .
Although impairment is often considered an inevitable aspect of the aging process , the identification of several potential risk factors suggests opportunities to prevent or delay acquired hearing loss.
For the purpose of the study, more than 65,000 women who were observed between 1991 and 2009 took part. More than 11,600 of them developed hearing loss.
The data show that participants who ate two or more servings of fish a week had a 20% lower risk of hearing damage than those who consumed one or fewer servings each week.
In particular, researchers have found that consuming more omega-3 fatty acids , which are found in seafood, is associated with a reduced risk of hearing loss .
In this sense, experts explain that diet can be extremely important in this regard.
The study data are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition .
