Mold On Food - Is It Safe To Eat?

The mold is a mold and has a plant-like structure - with roots, stem and spores.

It often happens that we are anxiously waiting to eat the last piece of our favorite sandwich or the fresh peach until yesterday, but we are disappointed to find traces of mold when we get there. Is it safe to remove the affected part of the food and consume the rest?

Mold on the surface of food usually appears white or green, often with a hairy texture. It may cover a larger area or be limited to only one part. And although it seems to be only on the surface, the mold is a mold and has a plant-like structure - with roots, stem and spores.

The roots are often invisible to the naked eye, and the stem and spores are what is seen on the surface. Spores can be transmitted through the air, which causes the spread of mold and "contamination" of neighboring foods.

However, there is a type of mold that is a natural part of a food. Some cheeses, such as Roquefort, are dotted with characteristic blue-green "veins". To achieve this quality, cheese producers add a healthy, edible type of mold during the production process.

However, other types of mold can lead to problems such as allergic reactions or respiratory stress . For this reason, moldy foods should not smell. Some types of mold form poisonous substances called mycotoxins, which can lead to the development of serious diseases.

What to do with the delicious peach, which we have been waiting for to taste, but it has started to mold? Due to its soft texture and high water content , in this case it is possible to have even deeper and invisible contamination of the fruit. Therefore, it is recommended not to consume.

While not all moldy foods should be discarded, there are some that should not be consumed. These are foods that have a high water content and a soft texture. The reason is that mold can grow much deeper than can be seen.

In particular, foods that should be discarded immediately if we notice mold are: meat, dishes cooked in clay pots, cooked cereals and pasta, peanut butter, legumes, nuts, soft cheeses, yogurt, cream.
