Faster utilization of antioxidants in obese children is the reason for their high cardiovascular risk. New Castle experts recommend that overweight and obese children consume twice as many vegetables and fruits - the main natural sources of antioxidants.

The latter reduce the inflammatory processes that are thought to underlie the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic lesions of the vascular system.

A clinical study in New Castle examined the level of carotenoids among 100 children. Their level was lowest in cases of overweight and obesity. It is relatively higher among children who maintain their weight within the healthy range and eat the same amount of fruits and vegetables. Obviously, the team commented, the problem lies in the more intensive use of antioxidants among individuals with a higher body mass index.
