Italians conducted a study involving 186 obese and overweight children. It records the level of thyroid hormones, antibodies and imaging studies of the thyroid gland. According to experts, the combination of high body mass index and gland dysfunction is common. Inflammatory changes were found, but not those of Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis.

Weight loss will be followed by improvement in thyroid function. Hypothyroidism is associated with weight gain, but thyroid stimulation does not inevitably lead to weight loss.
