Overweight women or those who lift heavy objects are at risk of pelvic muscle weakness. Swedes have assessed the predisposing factors to pelvic organ prolapse - a condition in which due to the weakness of connective tissue and muscles lead to protrusion of the surrounding organs in the vagina. The complaints are a feeling of tension in the vagina, chronic pain in the lower abdomen.

It is known that childbirth is one of the factors in the development of the problem, but little is known about other features unrelated to pregnancy. A study published in the latest issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology found that women who were overweight or obese were several times more prone to the condition. The conclusions are similar among women who weigh heavily. There is a higher risk in women with a family history of connective tissue weakness - varicose veins, hernias, hemorrhoids, as well as vaginal prolapse itself. Another key point is chronic constipation. But it is not clear whether it is the result of prolapse or constipation is the cause of weakness of the pelvic floor.

Doctors express the need for longer and more thorough studies to clarify the etiology and pathogenesis of the condition.
