PepsiCo Removes An Ingredient From The Gatorade Sports Drink

The ingredient, brominated vegetable oil, contained in sports drinks and those of the car type, is a chemical with bromine as its main component.

The American company PepsiCo Inc has announced that it will stop using a certain ingredient in the production of the sports drink Gatorade .

The ingredient, brominated vegetable oil (BVO), contained in sports drinks and those of the car type, is a chemical substance with a main component bromine, which can be extremely harmful to the body, experts explain.

Small amounts of BVO are legally used as an emulsifier in some soft and flavored beverages to maintain a uniform taste. Due to consumer complaints, PepsiCo will replace brominated vegetable oil with a more harmless emulsifier, sucrose acetate isobutyrate(E 444), for a period of one year.

E 444 is derived from sugar cane and is used in citrus soft drinks to prevent the release of citrus oils and as a stabilizer of aromatic oil emulsions.

The use of brominated vegetable oil is officially banned in Japan and the European Union .

The Gatorade drink was originally intended for use by athletes , and its purpose is to rehydrate and restore carbohydrates, salts, vitamins and minerals that are reduced during exercise. The drink is also very popular among non-athletes.
