Fatty meats are to blame not only for being overweight, but also for weakening our immune system ...
Everyone knows that in order to maintain good physical shape or get rid of excess weight, we must limit fatty foods and focus on fruits and vegetables. However, it turns out that fatty meats (especially pork) are to blame not only for being overweight, but also for weakening our immune system.
A new study by researchers at the University of Gothenburg shows that foods high in animal fats weaken the immune system by reducing the ability of immune cells to deal with the viruses and bacteria that attack us on a daily basis.
The researchers performed a laboratory study with experimental mice, in which some of the animals were fed for a long time mainly with fatty foods. 60% of their daily menu was pork. The researchers observed how the physical and health condition of the rodents changed. The collected data were compared with those obtained from another group of experimental mice that were fed a low-fat diet. The second mouse's menu contained only 10% animal fat. Both groups of animals were kept under the same conditions and with the same ability to move.
Rodents that were fed fatty and high-calorie foods quickly gained weight. Most were even overweight. This did not surprise scientists, as a similar increase in weight is observed in humans.
However, it was surprising that these mice had a significantly weakened immune system. Various experiments have shown that white blood cells cannot neutralize certain types of bacteria. The risk of developing sepsis in mice fed pork was much higher.
Scientists have found that obesity increases the risk of inflammation in the body. This is not due to infection, but to the arbitrary activation of immunity against an imaginary enemy.
At the same time, when pathogenic microorganisms enter the body, the immune system cannot locate and neutralize them. These changes in immune function are thought to be the result of being overweight and overweight.
Although the exact causes have not yet been determined, scientists believe that the cause lies in three genes. Their activity determines how the immune system will approach the fight against parasites. On the other hand, genetic activity is influenced by the type of food that predominates in the menu.
