Probiotics Increase Vitamin D Levels

Cases of osteoporosis and children developing rickets due to vitamin deficiency, which leads to reduced absorption of calcium from the bones, are becoming more common.

We do not need to overdo sunbathing to get the much-needed vitamin D. According to a new study, taking probiotic supplements significantly improves vitamin levels in the body by 25%.

This is the first evidence of its kind that probiotics play an important role in maintaining and strengthening bones.

Previous studies have found an effect of a specific probiotic strain Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242 , which has a beneficial effect on lowering cholesterol levels, but its effect on the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin D is unknown.

The researchers studied the health data of a group of middle-aged volunteers who took probiotics for nine weeks.

They analyze vitamin D levels by monitoring 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the blood.

The results show that taking probiotics has significantly increased vitamin levels.

This is an important finding because it is massively deficient in vitamin D , the researchers explain. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with the development of osteoporosis and rickets in children. Lack of the vitamin limits the absorption of calcium from the bones.

The results of the study are published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism .
