Quinoline yellow is a chemical compound consisting mainly of a mixture of sodium salts and mono-, di- and trisulfonates. It may also contain basic colorless ingredients such as sodium chloride and sodium sulphate.


Prepared by sulfonation of 2- (2-chlorolyl) -indane-1,3-dione . Or more generally, it is the disodium salt of disulfonic acid.


It is used as a food supplement under number E104 . E104 is a colorant that imparts a dull yellow or greenish color to foods. It is added to lipsticks, hair cosmetics, colognes, ice cream and various pharmaceutical products.


Quinoline yellow can cause dermatitis and is recommended not to be consumed by children prone to hyperactivity.


The Ministry of Health in Bulgaria establishes the following permissible amounts of quinoline yellow in food, cosmetics and medicines, compared to other colorants:

 

  • not less than 80% must be disodium 2- (2-chlorolyl) -indan-1,3-dione disulfonates
  • not less than 15% must be sodium 2- (2-chlorolyl) -indan-1,3-dione-monosulfonates
  • not less than 7% must be trisodium 2- (2-chlorolyl) indane-1,3-dione-trisulfonate

 

The use of quinoline yellow as a supplement is banned in Australia, the United States and Norway.
