An ingredient found in red meat and added to energy drinks predisposes to the appearance and development of atherosclerosis, a new study shows. The researchers found that bacteria in the colon metabolized the substance carnitine to trimethylamine- N- oxide, which was found to be linked to atherosclerosis.
Researchers have found that a diet rich in carnitine promotes the development of bacteria.
The team, led by Dr. Stanley Hazen of Cleveland Clinic , studied the levels of carnitine and its metabolite in 2,955 participants - vegetarians, vegans (vegans who do not eat eggs, dairy and fish) and people who eat meat and animal products. After comparing the effect of a carnitine-rich diet with that of a poor diet, the researchers found that carnitine and its metabolites affect cholesterol metabolism at several levels.
Researchers have linked high carnitine intake to an increased risk of heart attack , stroke and other cardiovascular events.
Carnitine is found in large quantities in red meat - beef, lamb, and duck. In addition, carnitine is often added to energy drinks and supplements to increase muscle mass.
The study was published in the online journal Nature Medicine .
